In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Rob Black and Matt Greer wanted to figure out a way to see their friends.
Their solution was to organize a small golf tournament with friends, which they called the ‘Log End Invitational’ after Black’s company.
This year, on July 3, they held the second annual Log’s End invitational. But this year, there was a catch – they charged an entrance fee and donated all the profits to Bouffe Pontiac.
“It’s not some corporate thing, it’s more of a group of friends hanging out,” said Black. “We figured we may as well do some good while we’re at it.”
This year, the tournament was held at the Renfrew Golf Club. Between the 24 participants, the tournament raised $3044 for Bouffe Pontiac.
The winners – Dylan Wisotzki, Blake Howarth, Dave Hobbs and Pat Younge – received champagne to go along with the tournament’s trophy. “That’s why the trophy is in the shape of a cup,” joked Black. “But really, it’s all about the fun.”
Black says that they decided to donate the money to Bouffe Pontiac because the services offered by food banks can mean a world of difference to some.
“Those types of services add a lot to the community, we’re definitely better off having them,” said Black. “They’re always in need, especially in times like these.”
According to Kim Laroche, director of Bouffe pontiac, there are no current plans for how the money will be used. They expect that it will go towards food, which they buy from local stores.
She says that Bouffe had received lots of donations in the early days of the pandemic, but were worried that these donations would slow down over time. Since they cannot yet hold their own fundraisers, they were relieved when Black told them of the donation.
“We’re always trying to tell people how important the cause is,” said Laroche. “People don’t realize how heart-warming it is to hear that people see that importance. The fact that we received this donation shows that we’re not forgotten.”
Black hopes that the tournament will be back next year and that they’ll be able to raise even more.
“We’re already hearing from guys who wish they were part of it,” said Black. “So it’ll probably be bigger next year.”
