Looking out my window at a large puddle across the street, I watched as a flock of small birds began to congregate. It was fun to watch as their fluttering wings made the water bubble. More and more birds joined the group splashing, but just as quickly a few left… then there were none.
I’ve seen ‘follow the leader’ with people too. I remember a group of older boys in my grade nine class who decided to play a trick on the teacher.
They all stared up at nothing. Very silly, but most followed suit. A new product or toy comes out. Everyone wants it. Good for sales, but why do we feel we need to follow?
Part of the reason, I think, is our need to feel connected, and yet in another sense maybe we aren’t really satisfied with what we have. Do we think this new thing will bring lasting happiness or peace?
In reality, no thing can bring us fulfillment. Our deepest need is to be connected to our Creator, to love and worship Him. When we do, we move in the best direction. His love satisfies.
