Almost 70 golfers made their way out to the Pontefract Golf Club on Saturday for a day on the greens to raise money for their local fire department.
The tournament has been going on for the past six years and is masterminded by Mansfield councillor Claudette Pleau.
“This year I decided the money would go towards getting a new Jaws of Life,” she said, explaining that the current Jaws of Life the department is using is getting older. “It’s a community event, everybody gets involved.”
Following the tournament, attendees were treated to a buffet supper at the clubhouse and had the opportunity to bid on a wide selection of items to be raffled off.
One of the hotly contested prizes was a 3 litre bottle of vodka donated by Sandra Armstrong and Fred Sicard to thank the department for their help during the flooding this spring, which ended up going for almost $1,000.
Luc Sicard, whose son is on the Mansfield Fire Department, helped Pleau organize the tournament and said that the cause is a worthy one.
“It so important, our firefighters need equipment,” he said. “I do this for my community. When you’re retired, you think of your community.”
In total the event raised $4,180. The winning team in the mixed category was made up of Nicole Gervais, Marc Ladouceur, Doug Rose and Rachel Garvy. The winning team in the men’s category consisted of Dave Frost, Henry Duval, Michel Labine and Jim Sunstrom.
