The newsroom at THE EQUITY had a successful evening at the Quebec Community Newspaper Association’s 39th annual Better Newspapers Awards Gala on June 8 in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, Qc., taking home several awards for photography. Community papers from across the province submitted their best creations from 2018 for judgement across a wide variety of categories, including editorials, headline writing and advertising creations.
Former EQUITY reporter Donald Teuma-Castelletti took first place in the Feature Photo category for his stunning snap of Pontiac Senior Comets’ goalie Justin Bois (front page, Oct. 17) see below. He also received the Outstanding Photojournalism Award, given to the individual with the best photo entries overall. Assistant Editor Chris Lowrey received the award the previous year for his photos of the 2017 floods.
This year, Lowrey placed first for Best News Photo with his shot of a barn fire in Luskville (page 3, Aug. 3). He also took first for Best Sports Story with his feature “Coming Full Circle” (page 5, April 18), which detailed the story of Chapeau native Chris Hayes receiving his Stanley Cup ring after nearly 50 years.
Lowrey and Teuma-Castelletti took second place in the Headline Writing category with several memorable one-liners like “Trouble bruin in Shawville” (front page, Sept. 12), “Seeking a shoulder to pave on” (page 2, Jan. 24) and “Comets burn up on entry” (front page, Oct. 17).
Lowrey also took second for Best Agriculture Story for his piece about the impacts of the new North American free trade agreement on local dairy farmers (front page, Oct. 3).
Editor Caleb Nickerson and Teuma-Castelletti claimed second in the Best News Story category for their joint coverage of the tornado aftermath in the Municipality of Pontiac (front page, Sept. 26).
THE EQUITY also placed third for Best Editorial Page (page 4, Jan. 24).
