GRAND CALUMET ISLAND Nov. 25, 2018
Brunch, crafts and plenty of baked goods were dominating the Grand Calumet Island town hall on Sunday, as the St. Anne’s Church’s Catholic Women’s League enjoyed their 13th year of the community supporting their efforts.
Running from 10 a.m. till two in the afternoon, the event supports the group’s various charitable efforts at home and abroad, while also serving as a chance for locals to enjoy a meal out in large company.
“It’s always well-attended and received, and the people in the community enjoy a chance to get together on a Sunday,” said Joan Derouin, president of the CWL.
Serving up a traditional brunch, including bacon, beans, eggs, and the trimmings, Derouin said they can expect to feed around 150 people every year. As well, there’s always a good amount more that come solely for the craft and bake sale, taking place on the upper level of the town hall.
Preparations for the meal always start the previous day, and the group succeeds with the help of volunteers within and from their parish. In total, the event relies on 30 volunteers to run smoothly.
Money raised by the event supports the group’s parish activities, plus the money they donate to seniors’ and children’s projects in and around town. A portion is also given to support a child’s education in Peru, an initiative the CWL has supported for many years.
Money is also raised through the sale of raffle tickets towards four highly-valued gift bags. Each of those bags range in value from $88 to $220 and feature a selection of gift cards to be used at local businesses.
Past president Martina Evans said the event began out of a need to fundraise for all the endeavours that the group likes to support. It had begun as a simple meal, but over the years expanded to include the local crafters and artisans that occupy the main floor.
“It grows, it’s like everything else,” she said. “It’s a winning combination of brunch and these crafters.”
