SHAWVILLE Oct. 27, 2017
On Friday night members of the Shawville Curling Club held a party to celebrate the season that will soon be underway.
Club President Jeff Russell explained that there were several changes from last year. Wade Ellison took over the ice maintenance duties from the club’s long-time caretaker Rick Allen. The club’s kitchen — presided over for 22 years by Gloria Green — will now be managed by Ruth Smiley-Hahn of Café 349.
Members that attended got to sample some of the new items on the menu and enjoy a cold beverage or two with their fellow curling compatriots.
Russell added that Friday night curling would be returning this year, featuring mixed doubles, a fast-paced, two-person variant of the sport.
“We’re going to try and get Fridays rolling,” he said, adding that it will be a good way to introduce new curlers, since it requires less people and the games are only an hour. “It should be a good night for the club. Hate leaving it idle.”
The club also joined Curling Quebec this year, which will open doors for grant funding, workshops and special events.
Russell said that if all goes according to plan, the season will begin on Nov. 6 with the second annual fall classic bonspiel tentatively scheduled for Nov. 24 and 25.
