An old favourite has returned to the town of Shawville. The annual Community Bonspiel is turning 45 this . . .

year, and curlers and non-curlers alike are invited to come out to the club and celebrate.

Taking place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 9, 46 teams will compete across eight divisions to have their name permanently inscribed on the coveted toilet seat trophy. Though only one foursome will be able to hoist the hardware in the end, there are prizes for all who participate.

Organizer and member of the brain trust that schedules the numerous matches that take place over 10 days, Ian MacKechnie, said that this year’s event is in honour of Phyllis Wilson, a long-standing club member who has been on the bonspiel committee since 1994.

MacKechnie said that the event is the club’s biggest annual fundraiser, and typically brings out a large cross-section of local businesses, community organizations and friends.

Even those not setting foot on the ice will have the opportunity to take part in the fun, as the club will be hosting the live sets by local legends Reg and Shag both Saturday evenings.
