CAMPBELL’S BAY

On April 4, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), in conjunction with MRC Pontiac and the local SADC, hosted a breakfast meeting at the R.A. Centre in Campbell’s Bay, bringing together local contractors and officials to discuss opportunities for local businesses.

The breakfast was just a briefing, intended to pique local interest in a half-day seminar that will be held on April 30 at the Makwa Community Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ont., where there will be networking opportunities with some of CNL’s bigger contractors.

The morning began with a briefing on the upcoming work that CNL has planned as well as how local businesses can prepare themselves for the procurement process.

MRC Economic Development Commissioner Claudee Galipeau explained that she hoped local entrepreneurs would be able to take advantage of the opportunities across the river.

“Even if they can’t directly apply for a contract, they could potentially be a subcontractor for all these companies,” she explained.

After the presentation, many of the questions from the audience had to do with issues like security clearance or regional hiring priorities.

Galipeau added that there would be jobs for people outside of the construction business as well.

“Most of our companies are related to the trades and whatnot so that’s why we concentrated mostly on that, but there is a wide range of contracts that will be coming out,” she said.

Campbell’s Bay Mayor Maurice Beauregard attended the meeting and said that he would be encouraging local businesses to check out the seminar at the end of the month.

“I came today to this meeting because I think it’s very important for everyone in the Pontiac,” he said. “If I can bring something back to my local contractors I will spread the information.”
