RAPIDES DES JOACHIMS Feb. 19, 2020
The Municipality of Rapides des Joachims is undergoing some change, as the departure of two councillors has forced them to hold a by-election. The remote . . .
municipality of 170 year-round residents is served by four councillors and a mayor.
Mayor Jim Gibson said he was frustrated with the two councillors who left, one in October and another in January, due to the hit to the council’s budget.
“The consequences of not staying four years is that it costs the municipality about $6,000 to have another election, so there was no consideration for that on either of their parts,” he said.
The four candidates for the seats, Dale Lévesque, Mary-Lynn Daly, Anne Butler and Carole Desnoyers all have previous experience on council. Speaking by phone on Thursday, Gibson said that a public meeting with all of the candidates would take place on Feb. 15, with the advanced polls opening the following day.
The election will be held on Feb. 23.
