SHAWVILLE Feb. 16, 2019

The long-standing Spread the Love Bonspiel marked another year at the Shawville Curling Club on Feb. 16, with 24 teams turning up to play for a good cause.

The event is a fundraiser for the Ottawa Heart Insititute, and was originally started in memory of Billy Kuehl, a Shawville man and avid curler, who passed away suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 48. The tournament’s trophy bears his name.

In recent years, the cause has been taken up by the Powell family, in memory of Randy Powell, who also passed away due to a heart attack. His niece, Sheena Powell, explained that this year’s bonspiel would also mark the tenth anniversary of Randy’s passing, which made it all the more meaningful.

She added that she has the assistance of her cousin Erin and grandmother Melba, and said the Institute has offered a lot of top notch services to local people.

“A lot of people have been affected, and if you haven’t been directly affected, you know someone that has,” she said.

In addition to bragging rights, competitors could bid on a Texas mickey of vodka donated by Willard Smith as well as a Napolean Barbeque.

The day brought in a total of $5,215.
