The Shawville Men’s Fastpitch league got off to a hot start as they had two games on tap Sunday evening.
All four teams were in action starting off with the Young’s Appliances Royals facing off against the Bristolview Enterprises Athletics and was capped off with a matchup between the Ganon/Blackburn Electric Inc. Bucks versus the Trudeau Collision Brewers. The Royals came out on top over the Athletics 6-3 and the Bucks’ bats were on fire as two home runs led to a 6-2 victory over the Brewers.
The Men’s Fastpitch League was also finally able to host fans for the first time since last regular season.
“Ball aside, it’s just nice to see faces again,” said league coordinator Matt Greer.
Greer spoke on the trials and turbulations of trying to organize a sports league in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There’s a lot of people who took last year off, saying ‘Oh I’m not going to bother playing.’ I haven’t seen some of them in two years, so it’s nice to see them again out at the ball-park. It’s more than just ball.”
“We wanted to wait until it was the appropriate time to start, we didn’t want to be rushing into things. We wanted to see what the other communities were doing and see how things were rolling out and then get an idea an of when we could start,” said Greer.
The 2021 season had an earlier start than the 2020 season, which began last August although there was still a delay since the league is accustomed to kicking things off in May. Nonetheless, the league was delighted to be get started this month.
“There was a little more excitement this year versus disappointment last year,” Greer added.
Along with the league continuing this summer, the Shawville Recreational Association is planning to host a showcase that will have the Quyon Flyers playing host to teams from Micksburg, Napanee, Kingston and Quebec City. The showcase goes from July 16th to the 17th and first pitch between Quyon and Micksburg will be on the 16th at 7 p.m.
