A barn quilt is an eight by eight foot quilt block pattern painted on wood and mounted on a barn for passersby to enjoy. For homes and small buildings, blocks can be made a smaller size.
In 2007, Donna Sue Groves of Adams County, Ohio wanted to honour her mother, a quilter, so she decided to make a wood quilt block and mount it on her barn. This concept caught on with the neighbours and the result was the birth of the Barn Quilt Trails. Barn Quilt Trails are now tourist attractions throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Recently, Kathleen Ranger, an artist from Campbell’s Bay, Que. and Martina Evans, a quilter and artist from Calumet Island, Que., together with Martina’s visiting 16-year-old granddaughter and Canterbury Art School student, Faith Evans from Orleans, Ont. decided to paint a two by two foot barn quilt square on wood, for mounting on a house, shed or building of their choice. To commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday they selected a red and white maple leaf quilt pattern.
