Pontiac MP Will Amos found himself in international headlines for the second time in as many months, after he was caught urinating on-camera during a parliamentary committee meeting on May 26.
Late the following day, Amos put out a statement . . .
addressing the incident.
“Last night, while attending House of Commons proceedings virtually, in a non-public setting, I urinated without realizing I was on camera,” the statement reads. “I am deeply embarrassed by my actions and the distress they may have caused anybody who witnessed them.”
Amos went on to reiterate that his actions were “accidental” and video feed was not visible to the public, adding that he will be temporarily stepping back from his committee duties and as a parliamentary secretary to seek “assistance”. He did not clarify what he was seeking assistance for or how long he would be stepping aside from his duties.
Former Parti Quebecois politician and journalist Bernard Drainville, during a discussion on a Quebec City morning radio show on May 28, claimed Amos urinated in a coffee cup so as not to interrupt a phone interview. This version of events was corroborated by National Post journalist Christopher Nardi on Twitter.
Amos’ office declined to answer any follow up questions from THE EQUITY Adam Levine, Chair of the Pontiac Federal Liberal Riding Association, declined to comment in an email sent on May 30.
Pontiac Conservative Party candidate Michel Gauthier issued a brief statement on the topic on May 28.
“It is rather unexpected that two such incidents would occur in such a short period of time and it certainly raises questions in my mind as well as in the minds of the citizens of Pontiac,” it reads. “But I do not intend, at this moment, to pass judgment on yesterday’s incident, this is the role of the voters. For my part, I wish Mr. Amos the necessary support he says he is seeking.”
Last month, Amos made international headlines after he appeared naked during a hybrid session of the House of Commons. Similar to the second incident, he was only visible to fellow MPs and staff, but a screen grab of the incident was leaked to media and the story went viral, appearing in publications such as the New York Times, CNN and The South China Morning Post. The photo shows him standing in his Parliament Hill office, with what appears to be a cell phone covering his groin area.
Amos claimed that he had returned from a jog and was changing into his work clothes without realizing that his camera was on.
Bloc Quebecois MP Sébastien Lemire later admitted that he was the one that took the screenshot, but denied that he had leaked it to media. An internal parliamentary committee is currently investigating that incident.
