Alleyn et Cawood held their first community get-together since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic last Saturday.
For the people of Alleyn et Cawood it has been a tough year and a half. The community faced unique challenges due to their remote location. Many seniors in the area were afraid to leave their homes.
With cases of COVID steeply declining and vaccination rates peaking, the council decided now was the perfect time to hold a community event to cap off the summer.
Held at the Henry Heeney Memorial Park more than 200 people were on hand for the fun. Vendors set up shop; there was a kids play area. The municipality sold hats and t-shirts at an information booth, soliciting donations and providing information on the planned revitalization of the park.
Live music was provided by Groovegarden which describe themselves as “old soul old school rare groove.”
Councillor Sidney Squitti stressed the importance of all the volunteers on hand to make the day a success. Shiela Emon, special projects coordinator, was also a major driving force.
“It was nice to have that sense of community back and everyone to get together and interact with each other and meet new people,” Squitti said.
