The Shawville Fair may have been cancelled, but that didn’t stop the Friends of St. Joseph’s Manor from holding a fair of their own on Sept. 18.
Residents and staff dressed up in their finest plaid shirts and cowboy hats to gather and simulate the fair experience the best they could.

beanbag toss and a fishing pool where everyone was challenged to catch floating fish from a small pool using a magnetized fishing rod. Everyone was a winner and there were prizes for all.
Lunch consisted of pizza, hot dogs, deep fried onion rings and BeaverTails for dessert. There was even a pre-lunch chocolate fondue to get things started.
Members of Bristol View Farms arrived in the early afternoon with animal guests to fill out the fair experience. They brought with them a goat, a lamb, a rabbit and several chickens.
“If there was a ride to get on, it would have been perfect,” said participant Mona MacKechnie.
Mona and her husband Laurie are both residents of the manor. They also won the best dressed woman and best dressed man contests.
Staff member Charleen Moore serves as the President of the Shawville Fair and said she “wanted to bring the fair to them.”
Most of the staff got engaged and some even came in on their day off to help run the event.
This wasn’t the first time the manor hosted a themed event. Last month they held a beach day where everyone dressed in beach attire; it was a hit.
“They kept asking what’s next month, so we had to come up with something,” said staff member Wendy Stewart.
Plans are already underway for October to celebrate Thanksgiving and Halloween.
