The Shawville Lions recently honoured a member for all his years of hard work with, appropriately enough, a place to sit and rest.
Denzil Yach, has been a Lion for 26 years and has worked for the town of Shawville for the past 22, retiring last September.
He was quick with a joke when asked why he was being recognized.
“I don’t know. It wasn’t for looks anyway,” he said with a laugh.

In his capacity with the municipality, he oversaw the upgrades and maintenance of Mill Dam Park, where the new bench inscribed with his name now sits. The bench was fabricated in town by Magnalum Inc.
“I kinda looked after the park there for years and years,” he said. “The town owns the property, but I’ve put a lot of work into it.”
He described the upgrades that have been added over the years, from washrooms to the splash pad, to the new shade sail that’s coming soon. Yach, true to his colours, admitted that he had helped install his own bench.
“It wasn’t a big job,” he said. “Just to help them get started out.”
When asked what it felt like to be permanently recognized in public space that he’s put so much work into, Yach was humble as ever.
“It’s a great honour,” he said. “Other people have done just as much as I have.”
