Grandparents’ Day

This coming Sunday is Grandparents’ Day. If you haven’t heard about it you’re not alone, not everyone knows about or celebrates this holiday. So if you’re just hearing about this holiday, it’s one day a year that is set aside to celebrate grandparents.
Now that you know about it, why not take the time to celebrate the grandparents in your children’s lives this weekend. Help your child come up with a great way to celebrate and spoil the grandparents in their lives this year.

Not all kids are lucky enough to know their grandparents. Some get to know them for a short time, others are granted more years together. Some live near by while others build a relationship through the Internet or telephone and occasional visits.
Grandparents bring so much to our children; knowledge, stories about family history, stories about what you were like as a child, unconditional love and a ton of other things. Read on for a collection of ideas to do for and with grandparents on or around Grandparent’s Day.
The most important thing to remember is that most grandparents don’t want or need anything, they would probably be most happy with a visit with their grandchildren.
Time together can be a very special gift when families have such busy lives. Carve out a day to spend with them, do something they enjoy, some ideas include: playing cards, going for a drive around the town they grew up in (if this is possible), playing board games, baking, gardening, doing crafts, etc.
Make them a special craft to commemorate the occasion. There are countless ideas online for handmade gifts that children can make for grandparents. The young children can make a keepsake using their foot or handprint that can be framed for grandparents to admire. Older children can make them something more complex. Using a photo of themselves in the gift is always priceless because grandparents love photos. A great idea is a small scrapbook of themselves so grandparents can see all the special moments in their lives.
Help them: Get their groceries for them, make them supper, cut the grass for them, bring them to church, clean their house, run an errand. Find out what they need to get done and do it for them.
Surprise them with a special treat they love. Bake them some cookies or muffins.
A great way to honour grandparents is to volunteer with, or donate to a cause close to their hearts. Older children would be able to accomplish this with a little help from their parents.
If you aren’t able to see grandparents on Grandparent’s Day, try calling or face timing them to help commemorate the occasion. Kids could also mail them a special card or gift. Everyone loves receiving mail.
However you choose to celebrate the grandparents in your lives, give them an extra hug and kiss and be grateful and thankful for their presence in yours and your children’s lives. I know our lives are so much richer with grandparents in them. To our grandparents and my children’s grandparents thank you and we love you.
