The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is advising the public that West Nile virus has been detected in a sample of mosquitoes collected in Arnprior.

In a July 24 press release, the unit said this is the first detection of the virus in Renfrew County and District in 2026. Every year, officials monitor West Nile activity at 13 mosquito trapping locations across the district which are collected and tested weekly throughout the summer months.

West Nile virus can be spread to people through the bite of infected mosquitoes, with older adults and people with weakened immune systems at higher risk. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and vomiting. More severe cases (1 in 150 people) can include stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness or sensitivity to light. According to the health unit, four out of five people infected by the virus will not show any symptoms.

“While the risk of infection is low, this is an important reminder for everyone to prevent mosquito bites and reduce breeding sites,” said Dr. Jason Morgenstern, the RCDHU’s medical officer of health.

The unit recommends wearing light-coloured or concealing clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, jackets, long pants and hats, especially during peak mosquito hours such as between dusk and dawn. It also recommends applying Health Canada-approved insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin on exposed skin.

Homeowners may take preventative measures by removing standing water on their properties, keeping bushes and shrubs clear of overgrowth, turning over compost piles on a regular basis, and ensuring that screens on windows and doors fit tightly.

The health unit advises all people to seek medical attention if they think they may be infected or develop symptoms of severe illness.
