Downtown Campbell’s Bay was filled with people over the weekend for the fourth annual Maurice Beauregard Memorial 3-pitch tournament, held in honour of the town’s former mayor.
Beauregard, who passed away from cancer in October 2022, was very involved in the community, especially the local ball diamond. His family started the tournament as a fundraiser for the town’s central park, which bears his name.
Maurice’s widow, Kelly McMahon-Beauregard, who met her husband on the ball field in college, said that the weekend was exactly the kind of event he would have loved.
“It’s a great activity, great event. Maurice would be so happy, this is the type of stuff he liked, getting the community together to have fun with no stress,” she said.
Fourteen teams competed throughout the weekend, as well as a dozen in the horseshoe tournament. McMahon-Beauregard said that they had a small army of volunteers helping out all weekend, keeping the fans fed and the games running on time.
The winners of the Open Division were the Hitmen, taking down the Sons of Pitches on Sunday in the finals, while the Corriveaus won the recreation division over Les Buckaneers. First place in the horseshoes tournament went to Todd Gagnon and Cory Cheslock.
Though the total raised from this year’s event wasn’t known at press time, the tournament has brought in more than $34,000 since its inception. The funds raised by the event go towards three $500 scholarships for the local high schools, rewarding students who show leadership and community spirit. McMahon-Beauregard explained that the rest was given to the municipality to invest in upgrades for the park.
“The council really, they knew what Mo’s vision was,” she said.
