Downtown Campbell’s Bay was packed with activity this weekend for the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, which is also the 78th anniversary of the Campbell’s Bay branch.

The festivities, which were held on Friday and Saturday, included a BBQ, pancake breakfast, cornhole tournament, car and bike show and more.

Legion president Joann Hearty said she hoped to use the anniversary as a way to raise awareness about the Legion and its many activities, both for veterans and members of the community at large.

“It was a perfect opportunity with it being the 100th anniversary to let people know, ‘Hey, we’re here’,” she said.

Hearty, who took over as president in November, said the Campbell’s Bay branch has been growing. The Legion hosts jam sessions, dart leagues, euchre, trivia nights and other events on the weekend. The space on rue Front has recently been expanded to include more tables and dart boards.

“It was an opportunity to bring people in and get everybody out. With covid, it was hard getting the seniors out because there’s nothing for them to do,” Hearty said.

She said while there are now fewer veterans than there used to be at the Legion, there are still a handful. Rick Gutoskie, who served for 10 years before retiring from the service, is one of them. Hearty said through events like “coffee mornings” she is trying to get more veterans to come out.

“When I joined and got on the thing, I wanted Rick to be a member. It’s nice to have your veterans when you can use them, it makes them feel like they’re still part of it and it’s not just a place to hang out.”

Gutoskie, who also has two brothers who served 30 years each in the military, said the recent changes at the Legion have been well-received by the community.

“It’s positive. People like it, everybody seems to be in support of it. Every time we book events or have something going on we get quite a bit of support.”

Gutoskie said he is proud to be a member of the Legion, and hopes more veterans get involved in organizing and attending events.

“Everything is based around the veterans, which I take a lot of pride in from my service. And that there’s an organization and people here that are willing to work toward the effort of maintaining the recognition of those of us who have served, it makes you proud.”
