On Thursday night, the Pontiac Lions Club in Campbell’s Bay hosted a dinner for club members as well as the families of two local men who passed away earlier this year.

Charlie Frost and Steve Morin were two friends who died tragically following a snowmobile accident in Mansfield this past January.

The purpose of the evening was to present the men’s families with the proceeds from the “Two Legends, One Cause” fundraiser the Lions organized in late June. The day featured numerous activities from a pickleball tournament to a car show and silent auction.

Lions president Kim Lesage said that the response she received when soliciting donations and volunteers for the event was outstanding. There weren’t many dry eyes in the room as Lesage presented the cheques of $47,500 each, with a small speech.

“It’s a true reflection of a small community that comes together for the ones that they care about, and we really, really do care about you guys,” she said. “We will stand beside our neighbours when they need it the most.”

“This is for you both, Tammie and Lauren, but it’s also for Steve and for Charlie, for [their children] Noah and Owen, for Darcy, for Lucas, and for Evan, this is for all of you,” she continued. “We hope it brings a bit of comfort and helps ease some of the burden that you are carrying.”

Charlie’s wife Tammie Bérard and Steve’s wife Lauren Kluke said that while they knew their husbands were well-known and well-liked in the community, seeing the community response first-hand blew them away.

“Everyone has worked so hard to make this fundraiser come together from even outside the Pontiac. I don’t have words,” Lauren said.

“Thank you to everyone around [ . . . ] everything the community did, everybody got together,” she said. “It’s nice, but it’s hard at the same time.”

A fundraiser ball tournament for the families is scheduled for this weekend (July 24-26) at Maurice Beauregard Park in Campbell’s Bay.
