The ball field in Portage-du-Fort saw its first action in several years this weekend at the two-day summer festival hosted by the town’s recreation association.

The event was made possible thanks to three weeks’ worth of volunteer work, according to RA president Rob McCallum.

He said in addition to mowing and weeding the ball field and fixing rotten boards on the bleachers, volunteers fixed up all of the surrounding buildings such as the canteen, bathrooms and stage.

“There was a bunch of tree limbing that had to be done. Then there was an old tool shed that was probably 60 years old and it was ready to fall down. And then there was a lot of landscaping that went on, we redid all of the bathrooms and brand-new plumbing and painted the floor, painted the walls,” McCallum said.

Organizers said the festival itself was a success, with a four-team ball tournament, games for the kids, food and drink from the canteen as well as an open mic on Friday night that drew a big crowd.

“It’s been great. I haven’t seen that many vehicles in the parking lot in a long, long time,” McCallum said.

Jen Murphy, treasurer of the RA, said it was nice to see the community come together over this common cause, calling it a “good news story” for Portage-du-Fort.

“It’s for the good of the town, especially the kids,” she said, speaking generally of the RA’s recent efforts to revive its presence in the community.  “That’s why over the winter we did this pop-up rink just to get something going until we can apply for some grants and get an official one. Because we’ve got to get something for the kids again.”

McCallum thanked the volunteers who helped, both to prepare the grounds for the event, and also to keep the bar and canteen running throughout the weekend.

“I can’t say enough about the volunteers. People were here every day for three weeks straight, and then the organization on the back end,” he said, adding that they will try to build on this momentum and have another event before summer is out.

“I’d like to try and see if we couldn’t have another open mic or another ball tournament, but now with more notice we might be able to grow the ball tournament and have a two day tournament.”
