A public information session about Samonix’s proposed land-based salmon farm will be held by the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE) on June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell’s Bay RA.
Samonix, a company based in Chelsea, is proposing to build a land-based salmon facility in the Pontiac Industrial Park capable of raising 12,000 tonnes a year of Atlantic salmon. The company plans to use a method called RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture System) to treat and reuse water inside the facility, which it says will almost eliminate environmental discharge by recirculating 99 per cent of the water in the system.
Representatives from Samonix will be present at the information session to introduce the project and answer questions from the public.
The BAPE is an independent public agency that conducts consultations and inquiries on environmental issues in Quebec and submits reports and recommendations to the Minister of the Environment.
From now until June 26, the agency is making hundreds of pages of documents about the project available online for viewing, ranging from impact studies, to comments from previous consultations, to expert opinions of the impact study and Samonix’s responses to the environment ministry about the proposal.
Also during the BAPE’s 30-day information period, any member of the public may request that the environment ministry initiate a formal public review of the project by the agency. Such a request must be submitted no later than June 26, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
