Campbell’s Bay

Campbell’s Bay’s annual Winter Carnival returned on what may have been the last weekend of winter weather on Sunday, with no shortage of activities to choose from.
Skating, hockey and a puck-shooting competition occupied the ice rink while a fire pit complete with marshmallows crackled some distance away.
A small tobogganing hill, a puppet show and a clown entertained some of the event’s younger attendees, while volunteers served up free hot dogs, chili and maple taffy.
“We were really lucky this year. We were able to get an additional boost from the MRC to put on our activities, so we were able to include things that we don’t typically do,” said Stéphanie Hébert Shea, one of the event organizers and a municipal councillor in Campbell’s Bay.
Shea said that despite some initial uncertainty around the amount of snow that would be available for winter activities, the day had been a success.
“We’ve still been able to make a kind of big carnival from it all.”
Heather Romain attended the event with her sons Kaden and Leo.
“We came last year and had a ton of fun, did some sliding [tobogganing]. This year they’re brave enough to go on the ice and skate!” she said. “Great turnout this year too, and the food’s always amazing.”
“We thought it would be nice to bring out our son for some fresh air in this beautiful weather,” said local resident Stephanie Dubeau who attended the event with her family.
“It turns out to be a really nice day, and everything’s great, just having this beautiful event to bring people together.”
Bringing people together is exactly what organizers hoped the carnival would do.
“We like to see everybody out. It gives us all a chance to reconnect,” Shea said.
