With the bright August sun beating down, RBC Shawville staff set aside their banking duties this past Friday and took hold of a pair of tongs for a day of dedicated grilling.

Selling hamburgers, hotdogs and soft drinks to enthusiastic crowds, the RBC team raised money for the Race for the Kids, a 5km and 10km all terrain walk or run event in support of youth mental health programs at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

CHEO, whose main campus is located in Ottawa, specializes in pediatric care and serves much of the Ottawa Valley region.

RBC Shawville Branch Manager Meagan Derouin explained that the RBC staff work and live in the area, and it is therefore important to them to stay active in supporting the community’s social fabric.

“We really try to stay involved in the community,” Derouin said. “This is a small community and so we really want to make sure that we give back. And with something like CHEO, it’s a large children’s hospital that serves this entire area, so we want to make sure that we support it because our kids could end up there. We want them to have all the resources they need.”
