$1000 worth of cans picked up along Hwy 148 in a month

Agnes, Emmanuelle, Raphaelle, Meredith, Jennifer and Abigail are the oldest six of Jean-Claude Beaucher and Caroline Plourde’s eight children. Working a few hours each day since June, they collected cans from the shoulders and ditches along Hwy. 148, from the Mountain Road turnoff in Luskville all the way up to the Ultramar just before Bryson.
The younger two, Orphar and Lucía, helped clean and sort the cans back at their home north of Quyon.
“So far, they’ve collected $1,000 worth of cans,” says Jean-Claude.
“Every day they go out, there’s a new story,” he told THE EQUITY on Friday.
“This one lady stopped and gave them 20 bucks, just because they were picking up cans. There was a gentleman yesterday who gave them 15 bucks for ice cream.”
“Somebody gave us a bag of cans,” chimed in Caroline.
“Marcottes (the depanneur in Quyon), they give us bags to fill up. One bag of 5-cent cans is 240 cans. The larger 20-cent cans are 100 cans per bag,” said Jean-Claude.
“This is all their money,” he said, confirming that his children will be able to spend it however they want.
“They’re going shopping on Saturday,” said Caroline. “They want to go to a restaurant, a food court, buy some clothes, some dresses, and hair stuff.”
