After the exciting news a few weeks ago from Pontiac Comets owner, Sébastien Bonnerot, that senior hockey would be returning to Fort Coulonge, Bonnerot has confirmed with THE EQUITY that 15 players have now signed on to play next season.
Bonnerot purchased the team from its original owner and founder, Danick Boisvert, who decided to take a step back from ownership to focus on his playing career.
Boisvert is one of the six new players confirmed for the Comets 2023/24 season lineup as of yesterday.
Since the confirmed signing of their former captain Darcy Findlay, from Shawville, Bonnerot has also announced the signing of Matt Warren, Connor Romain, Samuel Sanford-Roy, Dominic Jalbert and Olivier Knight-Rouleau, Étienne Champagne, Keyshawn Francis, Benoit Nadon, Danick Boisvert, Francis Desforges, Joey Kistabish, and Keven Levesque with negotiations and contract details in process for even more roster announcements soon.
When asked about the goal for the whole roster Bonnerot said that the plan is that, “30 [players] will be signed before camp” in late fall.
THE EQUITY also spoke with former Gatineau Flames player, Keyshawn Francis, who grew up visiting family in the Pontiac about his decidion to play for the Fort Coulonge Comets.
Francis said that “choosing to play for the Comets was a no-brainer for me. I remember the times I would come to the Fort Coulonge rink as a kid and play in front of family. To have the opportunity to feel that feeling again and play in front of the community was an easy choice for me”.
The Comets will be joining the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League (EOSHL) with nine of their local games being held at the Centre des Draveurs Century 21 Elite Arena in Fort-Coulonge. The arena has a newly-renovated lobby in anticipation of the season.
Bonnerot also noted in his talk with THE EQUITY that corporate sponsorship for the team will be opening next week, there will be two nights of season ticket sales at the end of July and the organization is working on two team fundraisers to be announced later in the summer.
The teams official schedule for the season and further contract signings will be released in the coming weeks.
