The Shawville Curling Club held its AGM last Wednesday evening.
During the AGM the group planned for the upcoming curling season, elected a new executive board, and discussed the financial situation of the club.
The meeting was attended by about 30 people and presided over . . .
outgoing president and incoming treasurer Andrew Rowat.
Rowat started his remarks by expressing his hope that there is no reason why they can’t have a normal curling season, which was disrupted last year due to covid restrictions.
During the meeting the group also discussed how the ice time would be divided by different leagues, the contribution the golf simulator was making to the club and how to attract junior curlers.
Notably, the club also voted to raise its membership costs by $20 to $320 a year.
“I think if you do the research, we are possibly the cheapest curling club in the northern hemisphere,” joked Rowat. “But definitely anywhere around here.”
Rowat explained that due to cost maintenance and the uncertain economic climate, it would be prudent to raise the cost of the membership and put the proceeds in a capital fund.
He also explained that even with the $20 increase memberships would still be far cheaper than the $1000 for a full curling membership in the Chelsea Curling Club or the over $500 each for both Pembroke and Renfrew curling clubs.
The raise in membership costs passed unanimously.
The group also passed a resolution raising the price of alcohol in the club to better reflect the cost of inflation.
The club plans to get the curling rink iced shortly and start games at some point in mid-November, with the actual start being announced on the club’s Facebook page.
The club is still looking for two more teams for Wednesday night curling, so if you are interested contact Jeff Russell on Facebook.
