The Quebec Police Services (SQ), the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and Contrôle Route Québec (CRQ) came together this month for a campaign against distracted driving.

In a press release issued Sept. 21, the SQ explained that numerous police operations and activities to raise awareness took place between Sept. 10 and Sept. 16. According to the press release, the SQ carried out 2,500 operations and issued more than 1,900 tickets for use of portable electronic devices or other display screens while driving.

Translated from French: “For the Outaouais-Laurentides region, 1,394 tickets were issued during this operation, including 62 for using a cellular device while driving. Police also arrested 16 people for impaired driving,” wrote Sergeant Marc Tessier in an email to

The press release notes that the SQ is targeting the use of electronic devices to help raise awareness around dangers related to distracted driving and to promote safe, responsible driving behaviour.

The press release warns that using electronic devices, such as phones and car displays, while driving can reduce driver concentration and increase the risk of being in a collision. It also warns that taking your eyes off the road increases the risk of other Highway Safety Code violations.
