Classic car fans and enthusiast are in for a treat as the annual Shawville Fair classic car show is set to take place Sept. 6.

The show will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and asks attendees to vote for their favourite motorcycles, classic car, hot rods, classic trucks, “1990 and up” cars and “1990 and up” trucks. Winners of each category will be awarded a plaque and all entrants will be given a small tote bag.

The show will also include a 50-50 draw, with funds going towards bursaries for the Pontiac High School hockey team.

“It’s basically all to do what I call a ‘blast from the past,’” Lucy Kingsbury, director of the car show.

She said that beyond showing cars, there will also be ‘60s and ‘70s music playing during the show.

Kingsbury said that many find a love for old cars because there are only so many left. There’s an ever-shrinking number out there and enthusiasts like to try to preserve them for future generations.

“It’s nice for the younger generation to see what cars looked like in the ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s,” said Kingsbury. “It’s showing the young people that if they like the cars and are mechanically inclined, they can take over [preserving cars].”

According to Kingsbury, the last fair car show saw about 200 attendees show up. She hopes to match this attendance this year. She expects regulars from cruise nights, which are held each Thursday night near Wings ‘N’ Things in Shawville to show up at the event, along with car enthusiasts from Gatineau, Aylmer, Renfrew and beyond.

Kingsbury noted that many entrants spend hours on end restoring their vehicles. Replacing everything from the mirrors to the wheels in order to make sure it’s in top shape. Just as much care goes into cleaning and polishing the vehicles.

“You can almost see them cleaning the bugs between outings,” she said.

Part of the reason that the show features vehicles from the ‘90s onwards is to show how designs and models have evolved over the years. Kingsbury alluded to more classic, chrome designs compared to recent plastic ones.

“Everyone has different tastes in vehicles,” she said. The car show, however, will have something for everyone.
