The Quyon library held its first in-person kids craft night in over a year last Thursday.

Before the pandemic, the Quyon library was a gathering place for many Quyon community members. Residents would regularly visit the library to browse collections and borrow books. Though the library was able to arrange contact-free book pick up to account for COVID-19 restrictions, the social aspect of the library was missing for many residents.

According to librarian Glenda Nitschke, the environment fostered social interaction that was very important to the community. “They couldn’t come in and browse the collections and that’s what they like the most, to come in and browse what we have and sit down and chat,” said Nitschke.

The many lockdowns also affected parents and children in the community who also considered the library a meeting place. Nitschke is happy that the craft nights are back after being shut down since February 2020.

During craft nights, Nitschke presents attendees with an example craft, needed materials and then helps them assemble their creations. This past week the craft was a firefly made from toilet paper rolls and an electric tea light. Before and after the crafts are assembled, the children are welcome to play with LEGO or browse the library’s collection of books.

But it’s not just for kids. According to local mother Caryl McCann, parents also gain a lot from craft nights.

“It’s a good meeting place… even for the other parents that come here, it’s good for the parents to socialize and get together while the kids are all occupied,” said McCann.

Nitchke hopes that life will continue to return to normal, and that the many events that the library hosts for the community will soon be back in full swing.

Craft nights take place on the last Thursday of every month. More information can be found on the Quyon Library Facebook page.
