The Equity received multiple awards at this year’s Quebec Community Newspaper Association’s (QCNA)Better Newspaper Contest.
Community newspapers across the province submitted their works from 2020 to the QCNA to be judged on their writing quality, editorial sections, design quality and more. In a July 15 QCNA press release covering the winners, The Equity received overall newspaper, writer and photographer awards.
The Equity won first place for best overall newspaper (April 1, 2020), best front page (July 15, 2020, pg 1), and best feature page (Sept. 23, 2020, pg 5) for former reporter Emily Hsueh’s feature Putting the yak in Pontiac. The Equity was also the first runner up for the best editorial page award (August 5, 2020, pg 4).
For her story Canadian horses: Michel Allen raises masters of versatility (Dec. 16, 2020, pg 5), Hsueh was second runner up for the best business column or feature award. Breanna Adams and former Equity staff members Caleb Nickerson, Stephen Riccio, Chris Lowrey and Hsueh were the second runner ups for the best headline writing award (Feb. 12, 2020, pg 9).
For his photo depicting Eric Rochon and his dog sled team (Jan. 29, 2020, pg 1), Nickerson won the photography award for best sports photo.
