Sûreté du Québec  (SQ) spent a busy week stopping boaters and handing out tickets during. . .

boating safety week from June 16 to 22

The SQ stopped more than 470 boats making 12 arrests for impaired driving and issuing 30 tickets.

In a press release, the SQ stated that while it is legal to consume alcohol on a boat — even a motorized one — they discourage people from doing so because the consumption of alcohol significantly increases the risk of death or injury.

Speed is another issue, particularly in situations with low visibility, such as fog or rain.

By law, boats are required to have lifejackets onboard all types of boats; though it is not mandatory to wear them, it is highly recommended by the SQ.
