SHAWVILLE Sept. 23, 2020
The Shawville United Church may be closed for services, but the church is still playing host to a community staple, with COVID-19 restrictions of course.
Every Thursday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, the basement of the church is filled with second-hand treasures and open for . . .
the community to shop. The thrift store is completely volunteer based and raises money for not only the church, but for anyone in the community who needs it.
The sale started up again at the beginning of September after having been forced to close due to COVID-19. They are only permitting six people in at a time, and all visitors must wear face masks. The volunteers are continuously watching the numbers in Quebec, and will open their shop accordingly, volunteer Nora Duncan explained.
According to another volunteer, Eleanor Rennick, the thrift sale has been going on for over 60 years, when it was called Lottie’s Loft, started by a woman named Lottie Bradley.
While the shop uses funds to help the community, that’s not its only purpose.
“Mostly it’s just giving the community a real good cheap deal on clothes,” Rennick said with a laugh.
Donations can be dropped off at the Shawville United Church on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, at the side door. They do not accept furniture or electronics.
