I would like to send out my deepest sympathy to the family of Maurice Pilon who passed away July 24 at the age of 87. Maurice was the husband of Doris O’Reilly and . . .

father of Dennis, Greg, the late James, Nancy, and the late Thomas. Many of you will remember Maurice either from Pilon’s Garage or by his working at the license bureau for 17 years.

Two weekends ago Theresa and I took a trip to Port Carling, Ont. to see our children and grandchildren. We call ourselves the galloping grannies because were always on the road and always getting into some sort of trouble, not quite as bad as Thelma and Louise but nonetheless something always happens to us.

We were having a really nice trip and because of COVID-19 we don’t want to stop in at restaurants so we decided to stop at a provincial park rest stop which is situated on the Lake of Two Rivers. I put my purse on my shoulder and was grabbing my bottle of water and Theresa had the picnic basket in her hand. She said, “I don’t think you need to take your purse we’re just going to be over there.” I didn’t give it much thought and said, “Yeah why bring my purse?” So I threw it back in the truck and just as the truck door locked I realized my keys, my phone and everything was in the truck. Now we’re locked out of the truck but we do have our picnic basket.

This nice couple came to our rescue and did the phone calling to try and get Canadian Tire Roadside Assistance here to help me. But the garage that was sent out doesn’t belong to Roadside Assistance so I had to pay cash to get the door opened. It cost $141. They say I can get my money back by sending in the bill so I’m going to try that this week.

While we were waiting for the tow truck driver to arrive we sat down and had lunch and he showed up about 15 minutes later so we weren’t detained too long. It never fails, we always run into some sort of silly problems.

We had a great weekend with Carl and the boys and Theresa and I stripped the wallpaper off the bathroom wall on Saturday. Carl didn’t like that wallpaper, neither did Shelley so they were quite happy to see it go. Now Carl wants to put in a new toilet and sink before he paints.

Corben and Tao are both working so we didn’t get to see too much of them. We had a fantastic steak supper on Saturday night and just enjoyed a peaceful evening. Of course, Theresa and I arrived bearing gifts. She had made some cookies and cakes and we brought them a few lasagnas that we made for them. I also brought the boys a bunch of tools and blankets that I’m no longer needing so the truck was pretty full by time we got there.

On the way home, we ran into a wicked thunderstorm and it was scary at times. I ran into another big problem on the way home but I can’t tell you about it but it has something to do with the bathroom. Let’s put it this way, it is no fun travelling when you can’t run in and use the bathroom. My advice is bring your own porta potty.

I got my new roof put on and now some new windows being put in and repainting and refreshing the whole house. I’m also purging big time because I’m planning to move soon. I will be selling a lot of my stuff on Shawville, Bryson and Otter Lake yard sales. Keep your eyes open for some great deals.

It is so hot that I have not mowed my lawn in two weeks and there’s only the odd spot that there’s a little bit of grass still growing. Gardens are parched and the hayfields are extremely poor this year. I don’t think anybody’s going to forget 2020.
