Despite the overcast weather and some occasional drizzle, members of Bryson’s Catholic Women’s League (CWL) and other residents gathered in front of the T.P. Tait Pavilion on rue Principale to mark a . . .
historic milestone for the group with a tree planting.
This year is the CWL’s 100th anniversary in Canada, and the Bryson branch’s treasurer, Betty Maloney, said that their planting of a red maple was a fitting tribute for a group that is pledged to serve God and country.
“It symbolizes the roots we’ve had for the past 100 years and moving forward as we branch out into the next century,” she said.
The housing complex that they planted the tree in front of sits adjacent to the local church and is built on land donated by the parish.
The building currently bears the name of the parish priest at the time.
“We thought it would be a very fitting spot to plant our tree,” Maloney said.
The CWL was originally formed in 1906 in England, and was founded in Canada shortly after, in 1920.
As a 26-year veteran of the organization, Maloney said that the group is involved in many projects throughout the year, from national campaigns to fundraisers for the local parish hall.
