I heard the story about a young woman who, when she was cooking a roast of beef, always cut off one end and put it in the oven. One day her husband asked her why she was doing that and she shrugged and said, “That’s what my mom always did.” Being curious, the husband decided to ask her mother and her answer was the same, “My mother always did it.” He eventually asked the grandmother and she replied, “Oh that’s because the roast was too big for the pot.” So goes tradition. We do something because that’s the way it was always done.
Often traditions don’t do any harm but in the case of faith we really need to look at what we are practicing and think about why? Does it fit with the way God says He wants us to worship Him? Can we find it in His word? Or is it a new trend? Are we following what someone did long ago and that feels comfortable?
God has given us His word to teach us about Himself and how we should live. We need to read the book!.
