Children in Otter Lake got the chance to learn the ins and outs of 3D printing at their library on Aug. 14, through Reseau Biblio Outaouais and Fabrique mobile Outaouais. Animator Véronie Drolet-Guénette showed the youngsters how to make 3D objects that could then be printed out in plastic.

Youngsters in Otter Lake got a chance to try their hand at some high-tech fabrication and design last Tuesday as part of a program run though their local library.
The class was put on by the organization Fabrique Mobile Outaouais (FMO), which aims to stimulate learning among youth in the region by offering lessons with high-tech programs and equipment. Another iteration of the course was offered at the library in Fort Coulonge on Aug. 9.

Animator Véronie Drolet-Guénette explained that introducing advanced technology in an easy-to-learn way keys the students in to the fact that they might like to pursue a science-related career.
“We talked about old and new technology,” she said, noting that FMO also offers workshops on hydroponic gardening, beekeeping and other subjects. “Usually, I’m with the younger ones but we also [have programs for] high schools and adults.”
Due to the fact that the printer can take over an hour to produce a single object, the apprentice engineers were only making models in a program called Tinkerlab for Drolet-Guénette to print out and bring in later.
