Barely a third of the electorate headed to the polls for the byelection for council seat four on Calumet Island, but nevertheless Alice Meilleur Pieschke came away with a convincing win.
When voting wrapped up Sunday night, just 34.5 per cent of Islanders had selected their choice of replacement for former councillor Patrice Dumouchel, who resigned earlier this year citing health reasons.

The results were as follows:

Meilleur Pieschke – 110 votes
Jasmin Lemaire – 62 votes
Irène Nadeau – 54 votes
Adrienne Turgeon – 48 votes

Contacted on Monday, Pieschke theorized that the low turnout could be attributed to locals being on vacation, and she thanked everyone that had done their civic duty and voted.
Coming in with 20 years of experience working for a small municipality near Val d’Or, Pieschke was excited to meet her fellow councillors and get down to business.
“I’d like to put my experience to work for the council,” she said. “I think I did very well and I’m excited [to start].”
