One long-time ferry operator celebrated his retirement at the Quyon Legion Thursday, as he looks forward to spending more time working on land in the near future.
Ed Scott celebrated nearly 30 years aboard the Quyon Ferry, surrounded by friends, family, customers and co-workers.
Originally working on the railroad, Scott was hired on with the ferry when he grew tired of constantly travelling for work.

“That’s when Mark McColgan asked me if I’d like to try working on the ferry,” said Scott. “So I said yeah, I’d try it.”
It was working with folks like McColgan, and his brother, Don McColgan, that kept Scott at the ferry for 29 years.
“The people were great that I worked for,” he said, speaking of Mark and Don. “It’s a great bunch who own it.”
Don said that Scott had always been a reliable, friendly worker, who will be sorely missed on the ferry.
“He’s always been good with the staff and customers,” added Don. “He’s loved by all the staff and made it enjoyable. We’ll miss him down there.”
Now that Scott is finishing up his career on the river, he’s looking forward to tending to his own land and property.
“We farm, my wife [Nancy Scott] and I run a farm,” he said, adding that they own 75 beef cows.
As much as the staff at the ferry may have liked to enjoy his company on the river for a few more years, Scott was adamant that it’s time for him to tend to his own.
“I decided to leave because I have a few things I have to do before I get too old,” he said.
