On June 1, the ultimate frisbee team at École secondaire Sieur de Coulonge (ESSC) had a home game where they faced off against Grande Rivière in a back and forth match. The home team came out triumphant in the end, with a score of 15 to 7.
Assistant coach and phys ed. teacher Carolyn Weir explained that this is the first year that ESSC has had an ultimate frisbee team, and she’s hoping interest will pick up. Weir, along with coach Francis Lamarche and student coach Marc Robert, have brought the students up to speed on the sport, and they looked just as proficient as their opponents.

Matches are seven on seven, and there are no referees, as players police each other.
Since Friday was the finale of the regular season, the playoffs were held on June 2 at École secondaire Mont Bleu in Gatineau. There, ESSC was felled in the semis 10 to 2 by a strong squad from Symmes.
Weir said that the team is made up of secondary one and two students and she is hoping to increase interest from the older students in the future.
She said that the game is great because it is co-ed, team-focused and requires little equipment or training.
“It’s a game based around sportsmanship so that’s great,” she said. “Plus, mixed sports are good for small schools like ours [with less players].”
