SHAWVILLE Feb. 10, 2019

The 44th Community Bonspiel wrapped up over the weekend at the Shawville Curling Club, with Palmer Plumbing pulling out a win over the eight divisions of spirited competition. A total of 48 teams played three games each from Jan. 31 to Feb. 10, as part of the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.

The two weeks of action featured many memorable matchups, including local students Big Cheese 2.0 beating PHS staff, as well as other old rivals facing off against familiar opponents.

Both Saturday nights, the musical skills of local minstrels Reg Carkner, Shane Presley and Mark Latreille kept everyone at the club entertained.

The annual event concluded with a nail-biter on Sunday afternoon, with team Three Plus One, consisting of Barry Draper, Phyllis Wilson, Helen Routliffe and Brenda Clarke, nearly edging out the eventual champions.

Team Palmer, made up of skip Jerry Hannaberry, third Joey Hannaberry, second Tim Palmer and lead Troy Griffin, playing in the Orange division, secured their place on the coveted Toilet Seat Trophy for this year.

Participants returned to the club on Sunday afternoon for the divvying up of prizes, arrayed along tables on the ice. Club Vice President Andrew Rowat thanked the curlers that participated over the past two weeks as well as the volunteer committee that kept everything running smoothly.

A special mention went to ice technician Wade Ellison, who had his hands full with all the traffic at the rink.

The final 50/50 draw of $152 was won by Gerald Lance.
