Congratulations to Kathleen (Hickey) and Mark Carkner, as they welcomed a baby girl on Mar. 30. They named her Amelia Kate, and she is a little sister for Audrey. Proud grandparents are Bernice and Mike Hickey, and she is another great-grandchild for Anita Draper. Best wishes to the whole family.

Over the past few weeks, the season has been winding down for our local minor hockey players.

Congratulations to the Pontiac Lions teams that made it to the semi-finals and finals this past weekend at the Slush Puppy Arena, which included the U13A, U15B, and U15C teams. The U15C won their finals and took home the championship. I’d also like to give a shout-out to my nephew, Caden Provost, as his U21A team, the Aylmer Mariners, won their championship. A big thank you to all of the coaches and managers who volunteer their time towards making memorable hockey seasons for our local players.

There was great hockey to take in over the weekend in Shawville, as the Flying Elbows hockey tournament was on. Hats off to Will Armitage and his team of volunteers for keeping this much-loved tradition going, as so many players and fans look forward each year to the Flying Elbows. The Pontiac Thunder team won the A division, and the Greystone Farm team took home the title in the B division.

Sunday afternoon, Gavan’s Hotel played host to a huge Canadian talent, as Wide Mouth Mason took the stage, with the Lionyls opening for them. The Shamrock Lounge was packed with music enthusiasts, and I’m told it was an amazing show. Next up, Gavan’s will be featuring Ambush and Gail Gavan on Apr. 5. It has been 25 years since they teamed up for performances across the Ottawa Valley, and they are reuniting for this show which promises to be a fun night of live music. I am really looking forward to it.

Happy birthday to Jenna Fleck, celebrating on Apr. 2, and to Sam Woermke and Graham Dowe, both on the 3rd . Birthday wishes are going out to my nephew, Noah Young, and to Jack Clarke, both celebrating on Apr. 4, to Erin Hudson Brazeau on the 5th , and to Emma Hobbs on the 8th. Happy days to all who are marking special occasions this week.

We survived another burst of winter weather this past weekend, as we woke to a snowfall on Saturday morning, and then endured a bit of freezing rain on Sunday. Thankfully the worst of it missed us. I am hopeful that is the end of winter now. We are ready for spring and warmer temperatures.
