Best wishes to Meghan Foran and Blake Howarth on their engagement. Their family and friends are very excited for the couple and wish them all the best as the planning begins.
I’d like to congratulate my friends Priscilla (Kluke) and Chad Brownlee on the birth of their baby boy, Oliver William, who arrived safely on Aug. 14. He is a little brother for Willow. I can’t wait to meet the new addition.

Last Monday night, was a big night at the ball field in Quyon. The men’s Quyon Flyers team was playing their final regular season game on diamond one against West Carleton Electric, while the minor league seven to nine year olds were playing in their playoff finals against Shawville on diamond two. Those games were followed by the women’s Quyon Flyers taking on the Orleans Rebels in a playoff game.
The men lost their game 5-3 and are awaiting the rest of the games in the league to wrap up before finding out their first round playoff opponent. The women won that night 7-0 and as of submitting these notes, they were still competing in the playoffs. However, the big winners on the night were the minor league seven to nine year olds coached by Cecile Dumont, who pulled out the victory over Shawville in the finals. Way to go, team! Congratulations to all our local ball players as they have all had an awesome season.
Congratulations to Avery Richardson on being named this year’s Shawville Fair Ambassador. Well done Avery.
It’s hard to believe the fair is already upon us and is now just over a week away. My niece Danica has been reminding me every time I see her that it’s almost time for Shawville Fair.
Our condolences to the family of Pat Stanton as she passed away on Aug. 16. She was a former teacher and principal at St. Mary’s School in Quyon and she was respected and admired in the community.
We are also thinking of the Dowe family, as Louisa Dowe passed away on Aug.19. She too was a beloved teacher. I travelled with Louisa when I was a student at Heritage College and she was always so kind and generous. Prayers are with both families at this sad time.
Happy birthday to Lynn Leach as she celebrates on Aug. 25. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.
As many of you know, the Theatre Wakefield group has been offering performances of Ian Tamblyn’s “A Summer A Fair”, free to the public, at various locations in our area, most recently at Lavender Ridge this past weekend. If you haven’t yet seen the play yet you still have an opportunity to do so as the group will be performing at the Women’s Institute/Bert Kennedy Hall in Quyon on Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. It is appropriate for all ages, and all are welcome. I hear the performance is wonderful and not to be missed.
Summer is now winding down and many local students will be returning to their classrooms next week. I’m sure all of the students and teachers are embracing these last few days of summer vacation. Enjoy and make them count.
