Sûreté du Québec (SQ) police arrested a Waltham resident in his home late on Sunday evening after a report he was spotted carrying a firearm on the town’s chemin Nadeau.
SQ spokesperson Sergeant Marc Tessier said the police got the call at 7 p.m. on June 1. He said when police arrived on the scene, the man, described as being in his forties, fled inside his house.
Sergeant Tessier said nearby residents were evacuated for precautionary reasons, and that it was not until the late evening that police were able to get into the man’s home.
“After negotiations and strategic operations, they went into the house and found the man hiding in his residence,” Tessier said, noting nobody was injured. “A firearm was seized in his residence.”
The man was transported to the SQ office in Campbell’s Bay and was scheduled for court on the afternoon of June 2 to face charges.
Tessier said an investigation is ongoing and that the police have a search warrant for the man’s residence.
