The Shawville Figure Skating Club held its end-of-year Happiness on Ice show last Friday. The event served as an end-of-year showcase for both the Shawville Figure Skating Club and the CanSkate program, which allowed all the skaters to showcase what they learned over the year. The event featured 101 skaters in 28 different performances.

For the Star Skaters, the older skaters who performed in competition over the preceding season, the show gave them the opportunity to showcase the solo that they had been practicing over the year.

The Shawville Arena was packed with the families of the performers.

“We’re really thrilled with the turnout we had,” said Shelley Heaphy, president of the Shawville Figure Skating Club and one of the organizers of the show. “The coach chose the theme of the show to be happiness because everyone’s just so happy that we can do this again.”

Heaphy explained that the club provides a great way for kids to be active and develop a variety of life skills.

“The skaters just develop such an amazing little group, they become like a little family cheering each other on. It’s an individual sport, but at the same time, they become a group,” she said, describing the bonds that get created in the club.

Heaphy explained that overall Shawville figure Skating Club is doing great, with participation in the club being high this year. For example, the club had enough participants to run two CanSkate nights a week.

CanSkate is a national program that works with that the club to teach kids to skate. Heaphy describes how the CanSkate aspect of the club gives kids a great chance to get familiar with the ice, which can help with more than just figure skating.

“CanSkate is a really great way to start your child’s development in skating regardless of what your goal is for your child,” said Heaphy. “Even if your plan is to put them in hockey, the more ice time the better.”

Here a list is of all the award winners during the show, though Heaphy made a point to recognize the hard work that all skaters exhibited during the show:

Most Improved Senior, Kenzie Smith
