The Equity

Dear Editor,

THE EQUITY’s Jan. 29 issue was an excellent issue. I have always enjoyed “The Way We Were.” I love history. I appreciated Bruce Armitage’s letter regarding the . . .

typo in the original 1945 paper, that was mentioned in the “The Way We Were” in the Jan. 22 issue.

In the original 1945 mention of Pte. A. Gay of Onslow Corners, his name was misspelled and should have read Pte. A. Fay. Mr. Armitage of Quyon, Que. corrects the error and goes on to relate the history of an orphan boy named Pte. Anthony (Tony) Fay.

Thank you to Bruce Armitage and his family for taking him in when he landed at their farm. Thank you for remembering Pte. Anthony Fay and for taking the time to write this letter. No longer is Tony Fay just a name in the paper but he is a real person because of this letter.

If the 1945 issue had the correct spelling of Pte. Fay’s name, we would have missed out on Mr. Armitage’s lovely letter. It has touched me.

My father Frederick Clancy was 15 when he arrived in Quebec in 1926 as a British Home Child. He worked on farms in Kazabazua and Venosta. His father was killed in action during WWI in France and his mother died 16 months later leaving six children homeless. They were sent to Catholic orphanages in Wales.

Also, I would like to tell you how much I enjoy Chris Judd’s “Outstanding in his Field”. Good sound information and common sense judgment.

The editorial by Chris Lowrey “Anglo Healthcare woes continue” was excellent. The Pontiac has 58 per cent of the population identifying as ‘Anglophone’. Don’t we count? Personally, I have not had any problems at the Pontiac Hospital, but I know in other areas of the province there is a problem.

Tourism is important to Quebec and it doesn’t make sense to remove English signage in large city hospitals or on roadways.
