The recent assault by an unruly, well-prepared mob against our southern neighbour’s Capitol building in Washington D.C. was instigated by its outgoing president. In many countries on this planet, such action would be . . .
immediately followed by the execution of the instigator (who would unlikely be that country’s leader).
I believe that the President of the USA is sworn in as Commander-in-chief of the federal armed forces and that the Capitol Police would fall into that category. The House of Congress was in session and elected representatives from all states in the Union were expected to be present under the protection of a police force who would put their lives on the line for them. They are the heart of the democratic lawmaking system and as such, are entitled to at least as much protection as the president’s personal secret service corps.
Instead, they were huddled in terror in their workplace. As a result, we had the ludicrous situation of a president in power agitating for a mob attack against the very people and institutions that he had sworn to protect. Is that not madness?
