Former chief of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation Gilbert W. Whiteduck will be the new NDP candidate in the upcoming federal election for the Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi riding after being confirmed, uncontested, in Wakefield on Saturday.
According to a statement by NDP Pontiac-Kitigan Zibi, over 60 people packed the room at the Wakefield Community Centre to celebrate the nomination.
“I’m really humbled by the opportunity and I want to thank the riding association for all of your support in their work,” Whiteduck said at the event. “I saw in the NDP fundamental values which align with my principles and values.”
Also in attendance were vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress, Larry Rousseau and current NDP MP for Nunavut, Lori Idlout, who were both among those who offered words of support at the event.
Rousseau spoke about how Whiteduck understands what the people in this riding need and said that “none of the other candidates for other parties can measure up to the humanity that you will find in Gilbert.”
Whiteduck assured supporters that he would continue to work hard with and for the community.
“I will continue to be involved because I believe in where I live,” he said. “This beautiful area needs to be protected, for you and for the younger people that are coming.”
