We see what we want to see.
I bought a litre of buttermilk for a dish I planned to cook. Of course there was a lot left over so I decided I’d find a recipe for muffins with buttermilk in it. Sure enough, when I opened my muffin recipe book there it was, just what I needed. I got out the buttermilk and made the muffins and then looked again to see long they were to stay in the oven. To my surprise, the title was Sour Crème Muffins, not Buttermilk Muffins. How did that happen?
We see what we want to see. I needed a recipe to use up my buttermilk and there it was. This is not the first time I’ve perceived something that wasn’t true and it doesn’t just happen in cooking.
We easily turn a blind eye to problems, thinking they will go away. We look at certain behaviours and justify them in our mind to suit what we can cope with.
We want something badly and refuse to look at all the warning signs screaming at us saying, “This will not bode well!” It’s our heart! The Bible says our heart is deceitful, above all else, who can know it? Recognizing our bent, should warn us to look to a place where truth is found. That place is the Word of God. When we read and listen to His instructions, we will be guided into a reality that will keep us safe from many pitfalls in this life.
